History of EBEC
The history of the EBEC started with its launch in 2002 when BEST members became interested in Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC) – the prototype of the EBEC in Canada. The idea of the student`s competition was presented at following General Meeting of BEST and was initiated at BEST universities right afterwards.
There were different names than the current EBEC and different categories had been tried. BEST European Engineering Competition (BEEC) was the previous name of the EBEC project, but it was changed in 2008 for EBEC – where it had its final shape.There were different categories of EBEC:Team Design, Debates, Case Study, Negotiations. After years of experience and feedback, Team Design and Case Study are currently the official categories that EBEC pyramid has; as these are being the most practical among others and consequently they are stimulating the enjoyment of competition among participants. EBEC has a developed chain of contest; a EBEC pyramidal structure. It consists of three levels; each level of pyramid refers to relevant rounds that are being held throughout the year:
- Local Round of EBEC is the first round which includes students and organisers from all universities that take part in the project. All EBEC rounds are organised by Local BEST Groups (LBG). While EBEC is becoming more and more popular among LBGs, the amount of participation to the competition chain is increasing by every passing year. When it comes to EBEC 2016 edition, the project is expected to involve 88 Local BEST Groups in 32 European countries.
- National/Regional EBEC Rounds are the second level of EBEC project. Teams that are winners of Local EBEC rounds in their universities are invited to the next stage; either a National or a Regional competition depending on their division in EBEC pyramid. In the framework of project EBEC 2016 there will be 15 National/Regional EBEC Rounds that will represent the second level of EBEC pyramid. Each year more than 700 participants attend the second level of competitions in order to prove their practical skills and to be qualified for the final event.
- Last but not least, EBEC Final event is organised every year after the second level of competitions as the peak gathering for the finalists that are confident in teamwork, creativity and innovative approach to problems in society or industry.
The realisation of EBEC Final event is only possible by cooperation of supporters, partners and several internal bodies of BEST that are involved in the preparations. Therefore during the event, considerable amount of people are taking part in the organisation of activities that are offered to finalists. There are more than 60 local and international members of BEST, who dedicate their full time in providing top quality organisation to finalists that participate in the competition. Ranging from logistics to media relations, every single activity is planned and managed in details so that finalists can enjoy the unique experience of EBEC Final event.
Jury – Fairness and transparency is a key figure in any contest, therefore we always position external professors, experts and company representatives who possess deep knowledge about the given competition task in order to assess the solution of finalists in best possible way.
Companies – We believe the engineering studies must not be placed far from the industry and latest technological trends. Therefore having companies present in the event ensures the tasks are oriented to current problems that the world faces nowadays and the enthusiastic minds of Europe meet their future corporations as early as possible.
Supporters – The project itself is conducted for students, by students. BEST is a non-profit, non-political organisation; therefore we always seek support from the institutions that are willing to recognise our efforts, share our vision to create an impact on Europe and its citizens. In return, we promote their means of support in our media channels and ask the representatives kindly to honour us by their presence or a speech on Official Opening or Official Closing Day of EBEC Final event.

EBEC Final 2015 Porto, Portugal
EBEC Final 2015 was held in Porto, Portugal. The event itself was supported by UNESCO, Câmara Municipal do Porto, Universidade do Porto, Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian, Instituto Português do Desporto e Juventude and leading industry partners such as Deutsche Bahn, European Patent Office, Colquímica, Reply, Dell and SAKTHI.
EBEC Final 2014 was held in Riga, Latvia and it was supported by Riga Technical University. There was also support from several important institutions such as UNESCO, International Federation of Engineering Education Societies and leading industry partners such as FIMA, Deutsche Bahn and European Patent Office.

EBEC Final 2013 Warsaw, Poland
EBEC Final 2013 was held in Warsaw, Poland. The event itself was supported by Warsaw University of Technology; as well as several important institutions such as Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Copernicus Science Center and leading industry partners such as Procter & Gamble, GSE, IVECO, Deutsche Bahn, GE and European Patent Office.

EBEC Final 2012 Zagreb, Croatia
104 top European technical students competed at European BEST Engineering Competition (EBEC) final in Zagreb, Croatia, in two categories: Team Design and Case Study. Case Study category had to solve the problem how to expand Kuwait’s airport capacity for the upcoming 2020 Summer Olympics. At the same time Team Design category had to to build a Roller Coaster. But that’s not all: EBEC 2012 has received the patronage of the President of Croatia!
EBEC Final 2011 Istanbul, Turkey
104 top technical students were united by one passion – engineering. This was the 3rd edition of EBEC, considered the biggest engineering competition organised by a students’ organisation in Europe.

EBEC Final 2010 Cluj-Napoca, Romania
This edition of EBEC had 104 participants participated in two categories Team Design and Case Study. Participants were winners of 13 national/ regional rounds.
EBEC Final 2009 Ghent, Belgium
LBG Eindhoven and LBG Ghent were highly motivated to organise this first BEST European Engineering Competition together with CWG (Competitions Work Group), it took place on the 17th-23th October 2003.
The first BEST Engineering Competition took place in Belgium with 80 participants from all over Europe. Half of them participated in teams of 4 people in a 2-day Team Design, the other half in a 2-day Case Study, followed by a presentation day. In the evenings 32 participants debated in teams of 2 people.
This edition of EBEC had 80 participants involved in two categories: Team Design and Case Study. Participants were winners from national and regional rounds. Every team who won national/ regional rounds in Team Design or Case Study categories competed in EBEC. One team consisted of 4 students. All the participants were eager to find the answer “ Who is the best engineer?”.
Since 2009, the Local Engineering Competitions are brought together in a common project where winners from these competitions compete at the Regional and National level and then the winners go to the European final which is called EBEC. The idea of having local, national and maybe a European final reaching towards cooperation with Canadians raised already in 2004.
Original idea of Engineering Competitions (EC) in BEST
Engineering Competitions (EC) Engineering Competitions (EC) was initially born in Canada. Canadian Federation of Engineering Students(CFES) established in 1985 the idea of having this competitions under the name of Canadian Engineering Competitions (CEC). The competition represents a valuable opportunity for industry participation and support, and sponsors and contributors propose real-world case studies for competition themes. The judges are drawn from related industry fields, or academia, and share their experiences with the competitors throughout one weekend as they network with the top up-and-coming engineers. The idea was afterwards taken by BEST and it resorted in the starting point of Competitions in BEST.
The idea of organising competitions was promoted inGA2002 and in Summer Courses that same year. In those first days, the competitions Core Team was planning already to have a Competitions pyramidal system, as the Canadians were already doing it. They wanted to have new groups formed at higher levels to keep up with BEST spirit – meaning that participants had to work with people from other countries that they didn’t know from before. The aim of these Engineering Competitions were to provide soft skills such as teamwork or public speaking among the technical ones, eventually developing the participants.
One of the guys who brought the idea of Engineering Competitions to Europe – Carlo Spellucci and his testimonial:
“It was January 3, 2002. The very second time a BESTie took part in the Canadian General assembly. I had the privilege to be that BESTie, sitting in a Montreal pub with the VPs of CFES*. Between beers and after dinner we wrote down on a napkin what would be the ideal journey of exporting Engineering Competition from Canada to Europe with BEST. I knew it would become a huge success, I just knew it. I was just surprised that something so cool did not start already with BEST while it was everyday life in CFES already then. I was only sorry I would not be there to work on it in the next years since I was about to finish my Treasurer mandate and go to earn a living. And now I see this video, all what generations of BESTies did in the last 11 years, and I feel so proud of our organization and you guys – you turned a dream from a napkin into wonderful, impressive reality.”
